Tunnel Runner - Steel with Acrylic Panels and shoes - 5ft x 8ft - 2017
|
A work created for the El Paso Museum of Art, comments on the contemporary politics of border control in an age when millions of refugees attempt to migrate for survival and a better life. This mixed-media assemblage recreates a shoe store display rack with a poignant twist. These are the very shoes worn by undocumented immigrants in their unsuccessful attempts to cross the border from Mexico into the United States. Many still coated with dust, each pair bears the marks of a long journey. In exchange for a new pair, the displayed shoes were all donated to Saucedo; they have been carefully placed on this rack that recalls the border fence dividing El Paso from Cuidad Juarez. Despite some of the shoes more playful colors, Tunnel Runner is a reminder of the hardships endured by those attempting to cross the border - both adults and children. Though initially detained, the wearers of these shoes have been given shelter in El Paso through the catch-and-release program and currently await trial.
